Description
In ancient times Charon was the ferryman of "Hades", carrying souls of deaths from one bank of the river Acheron, to take them in the realm of the dead.
Dante Alighieri told about him in his "Divine Comedy", we can find in the song Hell III of triplets describing Charon in different sides of his personality:
- As old white haired;
"And here towards us coming in a boat
an old man, hoary with the hair,
crying, "Woe unto you, ye souls depraved!"
( Inferno III 82-84 )
- As helmsman with a beard and fiery eyes;
"Thereat were quieted the fleecy cheeks
the ferryman of the livid fen,
that 'round about his eyes had wheels of flame. "
( Inferno III 97-99 )
- As a severe and impressive daemon.
"Charon the demon, with eyes of embers
them, has all the picks;
his oar whoever lags behind �
( Inferno III 109-111 )
